High chromium cast ironsand casting service

sand casting serviceIt is a flexible and widely used manufacturing process suitable for manufacturing metal parts, especially materials with excellent wear resistance, such as high-chromium cast iron. High-chromium cast iron (HCCI) is an alloy containing high chromium (1230%) and a large amount of carbon (23.6%). These alloys are renowned for their excellent hardness, corrosion resistance, and performance in high-wear and high-temperature environments.

High Chromium Cast Iron: Characteristics and Applications

Composition and characteristics

High-chromium cast iron, due to its hard microstructure, is classified as white cast iron; its main characteristics include:

  • High hardness: Due to the presence of chromium carbides (M7C3), these carbides are extremely hard and wear-resistant.
  • Corrosion resistance: Because of the chromium content, a passivation oxide layer can form.
  • Wear resistance: It is crucial for applications that handle wear-resistant materials.
  • High temperature stability: Can be used in environments up to 600°C or higher.
ApplicationsApplication fields

The characteristics of high-chromium cast iron make it excellent in many industries:

  • Mining and mineral processing: such as crusher backing plates, grinding balls and grinding machine backing plates.
  • Cement industry: Used for grinding media and wear-resistant parts.
  • Power plants: For example, handling ash handling systems and coal crushing equipment.
  • Pump and fluid system: Used to process parts exposed to abrasive fluids.

Mold making

Sand molds are made from a mixture of sand, binders (usually clay), and water. For high-chromium cast iron, additional considerations must be made regarding its high pouring temperature and metallurgical properties.

  1. Making a model:
Use wood, plastic, or metal to create a model to replicate the shape of the final part.
Insert the model into the mold box and fill the surrounding area with sand to form the mold cavity.
  2. Making the core:
For complex internal structures, use a sand core.
The sand core is produced separately and placed in the mold cavity before pouring.
  3. Mould coating:The mold surface is coated with a refractory coating to protect the mold from high-temperature damage and ensure a smooth surface finish.
Melting and alloying
  1. Choose the melting furnace:
High-chromium cast iron is usually smelted using induction furnaces or arc furnaces to precisely control the composition and temperature.
  2. Add alloying elements:
Chromium, carbon, and other elements (such as tantalum or nickel) are added to achieve the desired performance.
  3. Separation of Qi and Refining:
De-gassing treatment removes impurities to prevent defects from occurring in the casting.
Pouring

Fused high chromium cast iron (HCCI) is poured into a sand mold; during operation, care must be taken to minimize turbulence to avoid producing defects.
Because the pouring temperature is higher (usually 1200°C to 1400°C), the casting mold material must have excellent performance and the temperature must be strictly controlled.

Cooling and solidification

Control the cooling speed to ensure uniform development of the microstructure.

Rapid cooling can lead to the formation of residual austenite, while slow cooling can lead to carbide precipitation.

Sandfall and cleaning

After solidification, the mold is broken (dropped) to remove the casting.
Remove excess material (such as pouring channels and spigots), and clean the sand or other residues from the casting surface.

Heat treatment

Heat treatment such as annealing or tempering is performed to optimize hardness, toughness, and wear resistance.

The challenges of high-chromium cast iron

Contraction and cracking

High-chromium cast iron, due to its high carbon content, tends to contract more during solidification, which may lead to:

  • Internal hollow
  • Cast part cracked

Appropriate design and scaling systems are needed to reduce these defects.

Carbonate precipitation

Uneven distribution of chromium carbides can lead to differences in hardness regions. Controlling the cooling rate and subsequent processing helps alleviate this problem.

Mold erosion

High-chromium cast iron has a high pour temperature that can erode the mold surface, resulting in inclusions or a rough surface. Using special refractory coatings and high-quality sand can solve this problem.
