Advantages and Disadvantages of Alloy Steel, High Manganese Steel, High Chromium Cast Iron, Heat-resistant Steel, and Ball Molybdane Cast Iron

Different processing materials, due to their different characteristics, affect the difficulty of machining, the cost, and the performance of the final product. Therefore, choosing the appropriate processing material is very important. The following will introduce the advantages and disadvantages of alloy steel, high manganese steel, high chromium cast iron, and heat-resistant steel, as well as their applicable fields.

01

Alloy steel

Alloy steel is a steel containing one or more alloying elements (such as Cr, Ni, Mo, V, W, Nb, etc.). Because it contains multiple alloying elements, it has the advantages of improving steel's hardness, strength, and corrosion resistance, making it suitable as the material for parts that require specific strength and corrosion resistance, such as automotive engines and machine tools. By adjusting the alloy element content, alloy steel can be divided into low-alloy steel and high-alloy steel. Low-alloy steel with an alloy element content of less than 5% is suitable for general use, while high-alloy steel with an alloy element content of more than 8% is suitable for parts that emphasize improved performance. However, the high-alloy steel manufacturing process is more complex, and its high cost and excessive alloy content make it difficult to process, which is a drawback that needs to be considered.

02

High manganese steel

High manganese steel is a high-alloy steel with a manganese content greater than 10% and a carbon content of 0.8~1.5%. It has advantages such as high strength, high toughness, and high wear resistance, and is able to withstand a large amount of impact and wear. It is suitable for manufacturing excavator parts (chain, shovel teeth, and bucket teeth), various powder (crushing) machines (shells, outer casings, liners, and impact hammers), cement plants (hammer heads and various screening plates), railways (rail tracks, forks), etc., but has the disadvantage of being more expensive to process.

03

High Chromium Cast Iron

High chromium cast iron usually has a chromium content between 15% and 28%. Its advantages include high hardness, heat resistance and corrosion resistance. It has high hardness and appropriate heat resistance and corrosion resistance. It is commonly used in parts such as sandblasting machines (blades, distributors and control cages), paper pulp cutting blades, cement plants (grinding balls for various screens), sand pumping pumps and their rotor blades, steel mills (various lining plates and screens, coal grinding balls and discs, impact blocks, grate bars and rolling rolls), etc. Its disadvantages are that it is prone to cracking during processing and special attention must be paid to the cooling and processing process.

04

Heat-resistant steel

Heat-resistant steel is a high-alloy steel with Cr-Ni as the main elements. It can maintain stability in high-temperature environments. Its advantages of heat resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and anti-aging make it used in industries such as steel mills (heating furnace roller rolls, radiation tubes, and sliding rails), heat treatment plants (plates, columns, and circulating fan blades), petrochemical plants (various pipe connections and manifolds, cracking furnaces, and reforming furnaces), incinerators (filter trays, furnace supports, and lining plates), automobiles (exhaust manifolds, turbocharger casings), and other industrial parts.

Cast iron with ductile iron (FCD cast iron)

Spherical cast iron is also known as spherical graphite cast iron, ductile cast iron. In spherical cast iron, graphite is in a spherical shape; the round clusters can suppress the formation of cracks, thereby providing enhanced ductility. In addition to these advantages, it also has high strength and processability. It is commonly used in flat-bottomed pots, water pipes and pipe fittings, various manhole covers and bases, check valves, automotive parts (crankshafts, braking calipers and brake servo pumps), hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic bodies, and sheet metal stamping molds. However, compared to ordinary gray cast iron, the cost of spherical cast iron is higher, and its high hardness may cause certain difficulties during processing.
