The pricing content will simultaneously involve material, process, mold, machining, heat treatment, and inspection costs. When the buyer only provides the part name, photos, or samples, the foundry can only make an approximate estimate based on experience; and this estimate often results in delayed pricing, erroneous PPAP file calculations, or even failure to meet the specifications for the first prototype.

This list is specifically for overseas purchasing teams, R&D engineers, and supplier developers, especially companies looking to find steel casting suppliers from Taiwan, Vietnam, India, or China. This article will explain the key information a foundry needs before providing an accurate quote, and how any missing data can increase lead times, costs, or the risk of a first-piece failure.

Aboutqiao fu shen casting QFS

qiao fu shen casting QFS is a steel fabrication plant located in Taiwan that provides integrated services from design engineering, mold development, melting, sand casting service resin sand/shell mold casting, precision casting to CNC machining, heat treatment, and inspection.

QFS can assist overseas buyers from single-part prototype development to mass production orders of more than 1,000 pieces. Our material expertise covers alloy steel, high manganese steel, high-chromium cast iron, heat-resistant steel, and ductile cast iron. For QFS, every RFQ is not just a price comparison, but a comprehensive engineering review.

Why is a complete RFQ so important for casting steel parts?

The reason why a complete RFQ is important is because the cost of steel castings is derived from a series of engineering judgments, including material designations, casting processes, residual machining, heat treatment conditions, and inspection levels. These judgments require the buyer to provide clear information.

When data is insufficient, foundries usually have only three options:

First, adding risk into the price calculation leads to higher costs for buyers.
Second, we first provide a rough estimate, but such a price cannot truly serve as a basis for purchasing decisions.
Third, repeatedly asking for additional information prolongs the quote cycle.

A high-level RFQ can typically reduce the time for pricing by 50% to 70 percent, and it also avoids the most common reason for first-item returns: the specifications are not confirmed but assumed.

Another often overlooked point is that the contents of the RFQ will serve as the basis for subsequent inspections of the FAIR and PPAP documents and incoming material acceptance. If key dimensions are not clear on the drawings, future disputes will not be about who is right or wrong, but whether the parties can prove the specifications originally agreed upon. A complete RFQ is actually a safeguard for the parties involved in the transaction.

I. Basic project information that the buyer should provide first

Before exchanging the drawings, the foundry needs at least three basic pieces of information. These information do not necessarily require a lot of time for the engineering team to sort through, but will directly affect the pricing strategy and also determine whether the part is suitable for resin sand/shell mold casting or sand casting service notprecision casting.

1. Part name and actual application scenario

Please tell the foundry what this part is and where it is actually used.

Parts that look similar to a "support" can have completely different requirements for material, surface, testing, and reliability if one is used on a excavator arm and the other is used inside a dust-free chamber transport equipment.

The application scenario will influence the wear resistance, impact resistance, temperature, and corrosion conditions, and will also further influence the material selection. If this part is intended to replace an existing part, it is also recommended to provide past usage information, such as failure modes, service life, on-site complaints, or damage locations.

2. Annual demand volume and order quantity per batch

The annual demand volume will affect how the mold costs are distributed, and it will also affect the choice of process.

For example, parts requiring 50 pieces per year may be suitable for wood molds or low-cost resin molds; parts requiring more than 5,000 pieces per year may require evaluating more stable and durable molds and process arrangements.

In addition to the annual demand, please provide the quantity per order. For example, if the annual demand is 12,000 pieces, the monthly delivery is 1,000 pieces, and ordering 12,000 pieces once a year is a completely different project from the production schedule, material procurement, and price stability of the foundry.

3. Target market or industry

Industry-specific standards will determine which compliance and quality logic foundry manufacturers should use for evaluation.

Mining and sand and stone equipment parts often place emphasis on wear resistance and durability.
Construction and earthmoving machinery parts prioritize impact resistance and structural strength.
Food machine and water valve parts may require consideration of corrosion, cleanliness, and material traceability.
The energy, oil and gas industry may involve third-party witnessing inspections, material certification, or compliance requirements such as ASTM A352, ASTM A487.

As long as the buyer can first explain the industry background, the foundry can provide advance notice of the standards and documents that may be needed, thereby avoiding subsequent additional parts or re-quoting.

II. List of drawings and engineering data

The CAD drawing is the key to the success or failure of an RFQ for steel castings. If a foundry simply bases its pricing on photos, it is essentially guessing; but if it can obtain a complete 2D drawing and 3D file, it can usually provide a more accurate price and delivery date within a few working days.

The following four items are the most basic engineering data for serious steel casting inquiries.

1. 2D engineering drawings

Please provide a 2D drawing in PDF format, which should include complete dimensions, tolerances, geometric tolerances GD&T, surface roughness symbols, and clear title lines.

The title section should include material, weight, proportions, page layout, and figure numbers. 2D drawings are the most important legal basis for subsequent inspection and acceptance.

If your company adopts ISO GPS or ASME Y14.5, you should also specify the applicable standard in the drawings or RFQ. For critical quality dimensions CTQs, it is recommended to clearly indicate them, as these dimensions are often the primary items for inspection and production sampling.

2. 3D files

For inquiries about cast steel parts, it is recommended to provide STEP files, i.e., .stp or .step format. This is the most common format among different CAD systems.

If you have native files such as SolidWorks, Inventor, or Creo, they can also be provided together; however, they should not replace the STEP file.

3D models can help foundry operators evaluate parting line, ejector angle, machining allowance, pour path, burr and shrink hole designs. These DFM manufacturability analyses directly affect yield rate, mold design, and actual costs.

If there is only a 2D drawing without a 3D file, the foundry may need to re-model it, which will increase the quote time and may also introduce a risk of geometric interpretation.

3. Key dimensions and tolerances

Please clearly distinguish which sizes are critical sizes and which are just reference sizes.

The sand casting servicegeneral casting tolerances generally fall within ISO 8062 CT11 to CT13; resin sand or shell mold casting can reach CT9 to CT11; precision castingand CT5 to CT7 is possible.

If all dimensions on the drawing are labeled ±0.1 mm, the foundry can only assume that the entire part needs machining, and the quote will naturally increase significantly.

Conversely, if the buyer can specify six truly critical dimensions, and the remaining parts accept the general casting tolerances, there is a chance to reduce the machining costs by more than 30%.

4. Remaining processing quantity

Please specify in advance which surfaces need to be kept in their original casting condition and which surfaces need to be processed, and mark the remaining machining allowance for each machining surface.

The general machining residual amount varies depending on the part size, casting method, and surface direction, and is approximately 2 to 6 mm.

If you wish to have the CNC machining completed at the foundry, we recommend providing a finished machining drawing and a rough casting drawing; if only one drawing is available, please clearly indicate the machining symbols and the machining area.

If your company intends to process the parts itself, please specify this in the RFQ. This will allow the foundry to quote for the raw parts, retain a reasonable amount of processing left, and eliminate the cost of CNC machining.

III. Material and performance requirements

Material specifications are the most influential information in RFQs for cast steel parts.

For the same part, if it is made of alloy steel or high-manganese steel, the price may vary by 30% to 60%, and the lead time may also be doubled.

It is recommended that the buyer provide material standards and specifications simultaneously, such as ASTM, AISI, JIS, or EN. If the internal team is unsure which material to use, it can also first describe the actual working environment, such as wear, impact, temperature, corrosion, and mechanical performance requirements, so that the foundry can assist in recommending the appropriate material.

1. Alloy steel

Alloy steels such as ASTM A148 80-50, 90-60, 105-85, or AISI 4140, 4340 are commonly used for structural castings that require strength and machinability.

If the part is intended for load-bearing purposes, the requirements for yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation rate should be specified, and it should be explained whether heat treatment is required to improve quality.

The hardness range should also be clearly indicated, for example HB or HRC, rather than using descriptions such as "sufficiently hard".

2. High manganese steel

High manganese steel, also known as Hadfield steel, is commonly specified as ASTM A128 B-2, B-3, C, and E-1. This type of material is suitable for parts that undergo machining hardening after impact, such as jaw plates in jaw crushers, lining plates in crushers, hammers, and digging buckets.

However, high manganese steel is not suitable for purely wear-resistant environments with low impact, and it is also more difficult to process.

If high manganese steel is specified, it is also necessary to verify whether the foundry has the ability to perform water quenching heat treatment. If high manganese steel is not properly annealed and quenched, the part is likely to fail prematurely during actual use.

3. High Chromium Cast Iron

Common specifications for high-chromium cast iron are ASTM A532 Class II or Class III, suitable for high-wear, low-impact working environments, such as mud pump liners, grinding machine liners, and cement grinding parts.

High chromium cast iron has high hardness and excellent wear resistance, but it also has high brittleness.

The RFQ should clearly specify the target hardness; the common range is approximately HRC 58 to 65. If you need to confirm the core hardness, you should also specify whether destructive testing is acceptable, as there may be differences between the surface hardness and the core hardness.

4. Heat-resistant steel

Heat-resistant steels such as ASTM A297 HK, HP, HH, or ASTM A608 are commonly used in furnace fixtures, heat treatment equipment trays, kiln parts, and high-temperature fluid parts.

When requesting a quote, please provide the continuous operating temperature, working atmosphere, and expected lifespan.

For example, environments that are oxidizing, carbon-absorbing, or reducing can affect the choice of HK40, HP-Nb modified materials, or other more specialized heat-resistant materials.

4. Post-processing and inspection requirements

Post-processing and inspection requirements are the most easily underestimated part of overseas RFQs. These items can quietly add up to a total cost of $15% to $40% on-board.

The buyer should first decide which processes are to be completed by the foundry, which are to be handled by the downstream processing plant or the buyer’s own factory, and which quality certification documents are required for each batch of shipments.

1. CNC machining

If the foundry needs to be processed at the same time, please provide a finished processing drawing and indicate all finished dimensions, surface roughness Ra values, and inspection points.

It should also be clarified whether the grinding, chamfering, deburring, chamfering and sharp edge processing are included in the quote.

If the parts require concentricity, parallelism, or multi-sided positioning machining, these characteristics should also be indicated in advance. These characteristics usually affect fixture design and processing costs; they should be confirmed during the quote stage, not until the first piece is inspected.

2. Heat treatment

Please specify the heat treatment method, such as normalizing, tempering, solid solution treatment, or high manganese water quenching treatment.

At the same time, the mechanical properties or hardness range that should be achieved after heat treatment should also be indicated.

If applied to aerospace, oil and gas, railways, or other downstream industries, the requirement for a formal heat treatment record should also be stated in the RFQ. Foundries that have in-house heat treatment capabilities can usually provide a more stable and shorter delivery time.

3. Hardness testing

Please specify clearly the method of hardness testing, such as Brinell hardness HB, Rockwell hardness HRC, or Vickers hardness HV.

At the same time, it should be explained that the scope of testing and the frequency of testing are per item, per furnace, or per batch of samples.

For wear-resistant parts in mining and sand-blasting equipment, hardness is usually determined based on each batch and recorded in the material certificate. For structural alloy steel, hardness may be determined by batch inspection.

The buyer expected the foundry's default process to be inconsistent, which is one of the most common reasons for the material inspection dispute.

4. Size inspection

Please define the size inspection plan, including which CTQ dimensions to inspect, which measurement methods to use, and what documents need to be provided when shipping.

Common measurement methods include a ruler, a three-dimensional CMM, 3D scanning, or dedicated equipment.

The first inspection report, the FAIR and PPAP files, or the general process dimensions report, have different cost and delivery time requirements. The buyer should clearly state the minimum and ideal requirements during the RFQ phase; most foundries can accommodate this, but the prerequisite is that the requirements must be defined early on.

5. Packaging, logistics and delivery information

Packaging and logistics are not administrative details that are handled after the quotation is issued; they are part of the total cost of the steel components.

If a casting is damaged during transportation, the cost of re-manufacturing is as high as the first time it was made. If the machining surface rusts during shipping, it is also prone to causing complaints and claims.

The RFQ should provide the following information:

Incoterm trade terms, such as FOB, CIF or DAP.
Specify the port or destination.
Target delivery month.
Packaging requirements include wooden crates, VCI rust-proof paper, rust-proof oil, pallet packaging, or recyclable steel frames.
If the destination country requires the ISPM 15 wooden box heat treatment label, this should also be indicated in advance.

Additionally, if the annual delivery rhythm is known, it is also recommended to provide it. For example, “Annual demand is 12,000 units, monthly shipment is 1,000 units, with a ±200 unit flexibility” would be more useful than just writing “Annual demand is 12,000 units.”

This helps the foundry arrange raw material procurement, heat treatment batches, and assembly planning, thereby maintaining stable prices throughout the year.

6. The most common RFQ errors that cause foundry quote delays

In many overseas RFQs, the most common problem is not technical ability but a lack of information. The following are common gaps and possible consequences.

Insufficient 2D/3D graphics

2D and 3D drawings are the basis for geometry, dimensions, tolerances, and inspection. If only photos or samples are available, the foundry can only make rough estimates; the price difference will become larger, and it is also easy to run into FAIR risks.

The material specifications are unclear.

The material will affect the melting cost, alloy cost, heat treatment conditions, and machinability. If the material designation is not known, it may lead to casting the wrong material, or the sample failing in mechanical performance and hardness testing.

No explanation is given regarding annual demand volume or batch size.

Yearly demand and volume will affect the type of mold, process selection, and mold cost allocation. Without this information, the quote may be too high for prototype parts or too low for mass production parts, making it difficult to execute later on.

The scope of processing and post-processing is unclear

CNC machining, heat treatment, surface finishing, and deburring all affect the cost. If the RFQ is not clear, the total holding cost can easily be underestimated; the cost difference will only become apparent after delivery or import.

Inspection and documentation requirements not defined

Without clear definitions of FAIR, PPAP, material proof, size report, or hardness report, there is a risk of inspection disputes when receiving the first batch of materials, which can even lead to returns, rework, or the need to purchase additional parts.

Incomplete packaging and Incoterm

Packaging and trade conditions can affect logistics responsibilities, shipping costs, and the risk of transportation damage. If not defined in advance, this can lead to rust or damage to the casting upon delivery, or the need for after-sales claims.

A practical internal judgment principle is that if your RFQ file is shorter than the drawing, it usually means there are still information gaps. The ideal situation is that after the foundry reads the RFQ once, it can immediately prepare a quote without needing to ask for further clarification. When the RFQ reaches this stage, the quote can usually be completed within 3 to 5 working days, rather than taking up to 2 to 3 weeks.

Quick check: What should be provided in every RFQ for cast steel parts?

A complete RFQ for cast steel parts should include at least the following information:

2D drawings in PDF format, including GD&T, tolerances, and key dimension markings.

STEP format 3D file.

Material standards and designations, such as ASTM, AISI, JIS or EN.

Annual demand volume and quantity of each batch of orders.

The remaining processed product or the finished processing drawing.

Heat treatment and hardness requirements.

Inspection and documentation levels, such as FAIR, PPAP or batch inspection reports.

Packaging method, Incoterm, and target delivery month.

If you are purchasing cast steel from Taiwan, you can submit this information toqiao fu shen casting QFS for assistance in RFQ review by the engineering team, evaluating materials such as alloy steel, high manganese steel, high chromium cast iron, and heat-resistant steelsand casting service, as well as resin sand/shell mold casting and precision castingother manufacturing processes.

Common questions FAQ

1. What files should be provided when requesting quotes for cast steel parts?

It is recommended to provide 2D drawings in PDF format, including full dimensions, geometric tolerances GD&T, and clear title columns. At the same time, 3D models in STEP format should also be provided. In the RFQ file or inquiry letter, the material part number, annual demand volume, batch size, processing requirements, heat treatment requirements, inspection grade, packaging method, and target delivery date should also be listed.

For accurate quoting, the STEP file plus a complete 2D drawing is the minimum standard. Native CAD files can be provided as a supplement, but they are not recommended as a replacement for the STEP file.

2. Can I also request a quote from the foundry if only samples or photos are available?

Yes, but you usually only get a more broad estimate of the price; the quote cycle is also longer.

Through samples, the foundry can estimate the weight and geometric appearance, but it cannot accurately determine the internal structure, tolerances, surface roughness, or material specifications. Most experienced foundries will first provide a rough estimate, and only after the buyer submits a drawing will they provide a formal quote.

If it is a mass production project, a drawing-based RFQ is almost a prerequisite.

3. Why is quoting for casting usually more time-consuming than quoting for machining?

Because the foundry quote does not simply calculate the processing time, but rather a complete engineering estimate.

Foundries need to evaluate the parting line, ejector angle, pouring path, necking, mold design, alloy melting, heat treatment, residual machining, and inspection methods, and choose the appropriate process based on the required quantity.

Complete RFQs for cast steel parts are usually responded to within 3 to 5 working days. Incomplete RFQs may take longer than three weeks due to follow-up inquiries.

4. Do I have to specify material standards?

If possible, it is recommended that you specify it.

The most ideal approach is to provide internationally accepted standards and designations, such as ASTM A148, A128, A532, A297, AISI 4140/4340, JIS SCS or SCMn, or the EN GS series.

If you are unsure about the material designation, you can describe the working environment, such as wear, impact, temperature, corrosion conditions, and mechanical performance requirements, and have the foundry help provide recommendations.

However, it is not recommended to provide only company-internal material codes, as external foundries cannot directly quote based on internal codes unless you provide corresponding standards or component specifications.

5. How will annual demand affect the cost of casting?

The annual demand will affect the mold type, process selection, and mold cost distribution.

If there are only 50 pieces per year, a sand casting servicecombination of wood molds or low-cost resin molds is usually more suitable.
If the demand is 500 to 5,000 pieces per year, resin sand/shell mold casting or upgraded sand mold tools may be more competitive.
If the demand is over 5,000 pieces, durable molds or automated molding precision castingmay be an option to reduce the unit cost.

Therefore, the buyer not only needs to provide the annual demand volume, but also the frequency of orders, so that the foundry can provide a price that truly suits the mass production model.

6. What test requirements should be included in the RFQ?

The RFQ should specify the inspection grade, inspection method, and shipping documents.

The inspection level may include process inspection, batch inspection, first-piece inspection, or PPAP.
The testing methods may include a ruler, a three-dimensional CMM, a hardness tester, ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, staining testing, or X-ray testing.
The file may include material proofs, heat treatment records, size reports, and the first FAIR inspection report.

If the parts are load-bearing components or safety-critical components, please also specify whether third-party witnessing inspection or qualified laboratory testing is required.

Defining inspection requirements in the RFQ phase is the most effective way to avoid quality issues with incoming materials.

Send your drawing for a project-specific foundry quote

qiao fu shen casting QFS treats each overseas RFQ as a project, rather than just a price quote.

Simply provide us with 2D drawings, 3D STEP files, material requirements, annual demand volume, and target delivery date, and the QFS engineering team can assist with DFM manufacturability assessment and precision castingprovide a suitable quote based sand casting service on resin sand/shell mold casting or other methods.

The quotation content can clearly list the scope of casting, machining, heat treatment, and inspection, helping buyers more accurately compare the total cost rather than just comparing the price of individual parts.

Please send the RFQ information to the contact email listed on the qiao fu shenofficial website.
Please also include drawings, materials, annual demand volume, and the target delivery month.
If the RFQ information is complete, a response to the request for quotation is usually received within 3 to 5 working days.

[19

post-494","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog
["GET
